Backpacking Iraq: A Good Idea or Not?

Many people argue about Iraq being a dangerous place to visit after the war. The war produced shortages in food, rebellions, and lack of medicine throughout the country. Foreign backpackers and tourists are known to be kidnapped and even some even killed by rebels loyal to their former leader Saddam Hussein. This is really not one of the best countries to go backpacking, or is it?

Iraq still attracts tourists because of its rich culture and rich history. This country was once known as Mesopotamia, located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. This country still offers a unique beauty despite the war. Today, the country of Iraq is slowly trying to recover what has been lost in the war.

There are a few people out there who would really want to go backpacking in Iraq. Some countries have strict visiting policies in Iraq; they will impose a warning and even restrict entry to this country because of the unstable political crisis and also rebel insurgency.

If you really want to go to Iraq there are a few things that you should keep in mind to a much safer backpacking trip. However, you have to first know if your country allows its citizens to visit Iraq.

Because of the poverty situation in Iraq, it is advisable not to wear jewelries if you are going backpacking there. It is wise that you should leave your jewelries at home; this is because minorities of people in Iraq are known to steal from tourists.

Show your travel documents wherever you go. There are times where you will be asked by government authorities for papers. Always show your travel papers if a uniformed policeman or soldier asks for it. Be courteous and do not give them any reason to suspect or arrest you.

Always travel on safe zones. Ask for a list of places where you can visit from the local authorities in Iraq. After the war, there are still places that are considered hot spots where rebels gather. These locations are dangerous and therefore should not in any way be visited. Always go to a place in Iraq where you can be sure of your security.

If it is possible, you can go to the nearest base of the United States Military. They will sometimes accommodate you with escorts and can take you to safe zones. You can also request for a flak jacket and helmet for more security.

Always remember that your safety should be your number one priority. If you feel the urge to visit places in Iraq where it is not approved by the local authorities, ask the authorities first whether it is safe to go or not. If they say yes, then you can visit the area provided that you have a guide or an escort.

You can travel safely in the city of Baghdad and see a lot of beautiful historic sites despite the bombings on the war. However, some ancient artifacts of Iraq have been destroyed during the bombing, but there are still few tourist spots that are perfectly preserved and beautiful. You can even visit the place where the former dictator was found hiding.

You can also have a boat ride in the Tigris River and also try some of the best cuisines of Iraq. Visiting the former dictator's palace is a must.

To get around the city, you either walk or hire a local driver who knows the way around Baghdad. You can also rent a vehicle to drive around the city but this is not recommended unless you are escorted by Military Police. For overnight stays, you can stay on hostels found around the city. This is an efficient way to save money and you can also stay on US military bases if the commanding officer permits it.

Backpacking in Iraq can be fun. But, you also have to be aware of your own safety. Iraq can be a dangerous place to visit, so be sure that you really want to visit Iraq and go backpacking. Acquire as much information that you possibly can about the places that you can visit.
