Boating can be a fun and enjoyable sport or relaxing getaway for anyone. The water is a beautiful and fascinating place to set yourself free. However, there are precautions that you need to take to ensure that you are practicing good boating safety. Boating although fun and entertaining, can be dangerous if you are not careful and the best way to practice boating safety is to get the appropriate safety knowledge before heading out onto the water.

Take some boating safety courses
If you are a boater or thinking about taking to the open seas, then you may want to think about taking a boating safety course. There are usually free courses in most areas and you can take them in a day or so. You can get the whole family involved and get them to learn boat safety also. If you do not have any courses offered to you in your area, you can always turn to the Internet for help. There are plenty of resources there to get you started.

Never use alcohol or drugs on the water
When you are boating it is very important to not use anything that could impair your thinking. This means do not take any kind of impairing medication or drug and it certainly means no alcohol. Boating is just the same as operating a vehicle and the same rules in this area apply.

Use good judgment while boating
When on the water, you sometimes have to make good judgment calls and it is important to know when you have to do this. If you use good common sense and make the right decisions while boating, you will not only have a fun trip, but you will also ensure the safety of you and the other boaters.

Be cautious of other boaters
You have to remember when on the water, that you are not the only one on the water. There are other boats out there and you need to be aware of your surroundings and be courteous of the other people on the water. Maintain the water speed limit and know and use the existing rules of the waterway.

Keep your boat in good working condition
One part of practicing good boating safety is to make sure that your boat is always in the proper working order. Check your boat often and make sure that everything is working the way that it should be. Keep a good maintenance record of your boat and keep a regular maintenance schedule.

Always wear a floatation device
When on the water you must wear some kind of floatation device. You must have one life preserver for everyone on the boat. This is especially true for small and young children. Anything can happen at anytime and you should be prepared. You should wear your floatation device even if you are a good swimmer.
