They say when camping, you should take home nothing but your memories and leave nothing by your footprints. By and large this is a good maxim for the conscientious camper to live by, but it doesn't go far enough in instructing one on proper camping etiquette. Camping etiquette is important because in today's more crowded world, we all have to be more considerate of each other and eve more considerate of the environment.

There are some basic guidelines of camping etiquette that can make everyone's camping experience more enjoyable. If we all observe these rules of camping etiquette, the parks and forests will be a much nicer place for us all. Camping etiquette demands that you keep a clean quiet and respectful campsite at all times. In crowded campgrounds nothing is more disappointing that to have your enjoyment of the woods spoiled by someone else's failure to observe basic camping etiquette. No on wants to look through the woods and see a bunch of trash and garbage strewn around. In addition to being unsightly, it is unhealthy and unsafe. Garbage can and will attract scavenger animals and this can be a hazard to everyone in the campground. Camping etiquette dictates that you safely store all trash and garbage in animal proof containers and haul it away from the campsites to the campground garbage cans frequently.

Camping etiquette further dictates that you keep the noise level in your campsite to a volume that does not intrude on neighboring campsites. During the day, yelling and and loud talking should be kept to a minimum and camping etiquette requires that after a respectable hour of the night, noise be kept to an absolute minimum. People are in the woods to enjoy nature, not listen to your radio or drunken shouting. Camping etiquette demands that you show proper respect for your neighbors by allowing them to enjoy the sounds of nature and camping etiquette further demands that you not disturb their sleep with loud partying late into the night. Many campers want to get up early and enjoy nature, but won't be able to do that if they can't sleep during the night.

Camping etiquette is really some basic common sense and consideration, but just in case these simple guidelines are obvious to every camper, most campgrounds post them up so that everyone can see, read and observe them. This way the woods, parks and forests will be a much more pleasant place and everyone's camping experience will be enhanced.

I've had some bad neighbors when camping, and some fabulous ones. The worst can be loud, shine bright lights everywhere, and trashy. You might not even know that the best ones are even there.

Part of the reason I prefer backpacking to camping in a campground is so that I don't have to worry about neighbors. If there is someone there, I just keep on hiking until I find a suitable un-occupied spot. (This is also an advantage of using a hammock, I don't need level ground, so tent campers can't sleep beside me even if they wanted to!)
