Sane Camping
There is camping and then there is sane camping. Most camping that is done today by the average person or family in insane and unsustainable camping. Every summer, the state and national parks are overrun by vacationing families trying to get away from it all. But what are the getting away from? this is not sane camping. They flee the city in droves driving the gas guzzling SUV just so they can sit in traffic jams inside the state and national parks. And, of course they have brought with them every electronic device known to man just so they should risk a moment of boredom. Is this sane camping?
How can you enjoy the beauty of nature from the inside of an air conditioned SUV that is stuck in a five mile long traffic jam in some national park? especially when the kids haven't even looked out the windows in the past six hours because they are glued to their hand-held video games or watching movies on the in-car DVD play? Is this sane camping? No this is not sane camping nor is it good for the kids of good for the environment. So why do they do it?
some do it because compared to the artificial life they lead back in the city, this is a natural experience. to the, this seems like getting away from it all. This seems like getting in touch with nature. If they at least glimpse a tree outside their SUV window, they think they have communed with nature. They think this is sane camping. And what about the people in their great stinking RV's? Is this sane camping? They think they are getting away form it all because they have to use a smaller microwave oven than they usually do to heat up their processed foods at home. They think this is sane camping while they sit around on astroturf and watch satellite TV just because they have to run a generator to do so.
Do you think this is sane camping? Do you think this is sustainable camping? Do you think this is good for the environment? Sane camping should be about ecologically sustainable camping. sane camping should be you and your family truly getting away from it all and leaving all the electronic junk of your life behind for a little while, at least. Sane camping would find you and your kids getting out of your RV's and your SUV's and hiking under your own power to a place where you truly can experience your interconnectedness with nature. Sane camping would be sustainable and not environmentally destructive. That is sane camping.
